The Magicians Recap: S2E6 “The Cock Barrens”

This is Season 2 Episode 6 of The Magicians: “The Cock Barrens”

Without anybody actually having graduated from Brakebills, the school was only frequented in one of Margo’s dream sequences. It seems like the days of calm school life (lol) are clearly far behind us. Instead, Fillory is under siege, Ghost Alice is haunting her loved ones, and Julia is pregnant with a demon child. Uhm, yeah. So welcome back to The Magicians.

Quentin’s still plagued with Alice visions

After giving us his own spectacular rendition of Cirque du Soleil to lure out Niffin Alice, Quentin travels to the Quinn residence to attend Alice’s memorial. His #1 mission is coming clean to the parents about what happened to Alice. Which he tried doing several times, in his defense. However, Daniel and Stephanie are far too shaken to listen to the details. To make conversation even more complicated, Alice keeps appearing and disappearing, leading Quentin into her dad’s study where he finds a book on pyramids.

Daniel catches Quentin infraganti, forcing Q to confess he’s seeing Alice. Thankfully, Daniel believes him and helps him interpret Alice’s message. It’s decided that Alice wants her soul to be sealed in a kind of pyramid magic. This, according to Daniel, would allow for her soul to rest in peace–or something along those lines.

Throughout the episode, Daniel and Stephanie are forced to come to terms with their mistakes as parents. Daniel regrets not having being a protective or strong father figure and Stephanie admits to having never even tried to understand her daughter. Even amidst stories of Alice’s cat Alanis Morissette, the Quinns deliver a convincing and heartbreaking coming-to-terms that promises to ripple into later episodes.

Life doesn’t get any easier for Quentin even after serving as referee for the Quinns’ reconciliation. As it turns out, Alice did answer to his Niffin-Cirque-du-Soleil call, as she’s in fact trapped in Quentin’s tattoo in place of the cacodemon. Fun, huh?

Best bitches: activate

Julia and Kady still have two major tasks at hand. One: get rid of demon baby. Two: find Dana (a.k.a the woman who once banished Reynard) and get her to do it again. As you all know, the JuliaxKady scenes are usually very off-putting for me. While their characters in season one could garner some sympathy, their selfish acts were really starting to tick me off. Yet, life comes full circle, and here are the best bitches paying their dues. Which is fun, because it’s seriously getting crazy in here.

For most of the episode, Kady’s job is to track down some culty, magical abortionists to deal with Julia’s situation. Julia, on the other hand, takes the lead on their Hoboken witch hunt. Yes, you read that right. Hoboken, New Jersey. After some research, the best bitches put together that the banishing spell was casted from this location. And, because this is The Magicians after all, Julia manages to track down the current location of this Dana person thanks to some petridish magic.

Dana is first reluctant to help Julia, but decides to invite her in after Julia reveals she’s pregnant. Soon enough, we find out that Dana was also pregnant, that she had the demon child, and that she used the power of his birth to banish Reynard. Of course, Julia only finds out about this after Dana hits her in the head with a bat. Real talk.

For the past 40 years, Dana has been keeping herself hidden by harnessing the power of a mutant-like dude that chills on top of cat litter and apparently isn’t her son. Now, Dana says her son is out there and doesn’t know who his real parents are…so, WHO’S THE SON? Anyways, we’ll probably never know now because after Kady rescues Julia, they leave Dana to Reynard.

The Kingdom of Fillory is under siege

Just when Margo and Eliot were starting to get a grip on the whole ruling thing, in comes Prince Ess. Yes, many a joke were made. He announces he comes from the kingdom of Loria, here to offer a treaty between the two kingdoms over the poorly administered magic well. Part of the deal involves Margo’s hand in marriage, and while the proposal was already performing poorly, Prince Ess really puts his foot in his mouth when he calls Margo a virgin.

With some illusion magic, Ess makes them believe he’s transported the castle into Loria, which looks like actual cock barrens. Penny has been on a search for the Fillorian moss Mayakovsky asked for, stalking a map maker that isn’t keen on revealing the location of said moss until Thursday. Fen informs Eliot that she was part of the FU Fighters and Eliot thinks he cannot trust his wife anymore. However, he still admits to Margo that his wife had grown on him.

Margo seduces Ess in an attempt to prove that she is better than the Lorian girls, and by the end of it seems ready to marry Ess. In her dreams, Penny appears to inquire as to their location. She describes the cock barrens and Penny manages to travel to the lost castle. When he arrives, Penny informs the high kings of Fillory that they’re being fooled by illusion magic and Margo is pissed. To close the episode, Margo declares war on Loria while smashing the patriarchy. Long live Margo the Destroyer! (Just hoping she doesn’t destroy us in the process…)
