Game of Thrones Season 7 Predictions: Who Will Survive?

Game of Thrones Season 7 is about to grace our screens and wreck our lives.

(For a Season 6 finale recap, click here). Sure, we miss our favorite characters and desperately want to know how this ends. But can we stomach it? Probably not. The only thing we can do is prepare ourselves with some honest to blog Game of Thrones Season 7 predictions.

We’ve pitted surviving characters against each other. Some ended up together by default, while others found their pairing through chance. Are we suggesting only one of the two will live, or that these parallels are law in Game of Thrones Season 7/8? Not at all, but this system forced us into truly acknowledging that (in true George R. R. Martin fashion) all men must die.

What we’re after is this: when push comes to shove, who’s getting shoved?

Key: crossed out names indicate certain death. Commentary includes more detailed predictions. Commentators Gaby, Rachael, and Matt are represented by their initials.

Cersei Lannister x Jaime Lannister

G: Yeah, no. They’re both dying. As in Jaime will be slayed/will slay himself right after he willingly kills his sister/lover.

R: I’m a firm believer that both of these two are both going to die horrible, violent deaths. Although I do hope Jaime goes out in a blaze of glory, preferably taking down his sister in the process.

M: God, wouldn’t it be amazing if they died how they were introduced? Banging in a tower with Bran awkwardly watching.

Sandor Clegane (The Hound) x Gregor Clegane (The Mountain)

G: I think The Hound lives. The Mountain’s too much, so I feel he’ll self-destruct.

R: I think only one really capable of killing The Mountain (besides one of Dany’s dragons), and with any real right to, is The Hound WHO WILL LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER THE END.

M: The Mountain is a zombie so technically, he’s already dead. Hound lives!

Brienne of Tarth x Podrick Payne

G: Podrick, tbh.

R: I think Podrick is making it out alive. Brienne will kick it being the badass lady-knight she is (but only after she and Jaime have made out AT LEAST once).

M: Brienne of Tarth is going to get killed in the most violent way. I don’t want it, but I can feel it.

Tyrion Lannister x Varys

G: Both might make it.

R: I’m keeping all fingers crossed that both make it.

M: Varys has too many eggs in too many baskets. His dealings are going to cost him much more than a lost penis.

Theon Greyjoy x Yara Greyjoy

G: Uhm, both die?

R: I’m personally all about Theon’s redemption arc. I want to see him rise from the ashes of his past life. I also want to see him and Sansa in a room together one last time.

M: I’m in love with Yara, she scares me and it’s wonderful. She’s taking over House Greyjoy, and Reek? He’s going to die by the hand of a Stark.

Jorah Mormont x Davos Seaworth

G: Both die or Davos lives.

R: I’m with Gaby on this one. Either both are dying or Davos is making it out alive.

M: No elder white men will survive this journey into matriarchy, tbh.

Melisandre x Missandei

G: Missandei for sure. Melisandre is already in too deep.

R: I want Missandei to live and have a happily ever after with Grey Worm please and thank you.

M: Melisandre. Only because I will never unsee wrinkled nudity or shadow birth scene.

Daario Naharis x Bronn

G: I’m unsure on this one. I do feel because Bronn acts all tough, he might die. Then again, he barely gets screen time these days, so what if they forget about him?

R: My gut says that Daario’s going to try and betray Dany after she left him in the dust, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he died by her hand. Bronn is too good and pure to die.

M: Kill them both! All men must die!

Samwell Tarly x Gilly

G: Both live, especially after Sam saves the day with his maester knowledge.

R: If anything happens to Sam or Gilly I will personally fight David Benioff.

M: I want to say that the showrunners wouldn’t kill off an unwed mother or the upbeat obese knight that fans love, but I remember what happened to Princess Shireen. DEATH WILL COME.

Jaqen H’ghar x Arya Stark

G: I think the Stark death quota has been fulfilled. Also, Arya has transcended to a new plain of life. I don’t think people can touch her no more.

R: Jaqen H’ghar will die, killed by Arya. Which is a shame really because his hair is a work of art.

M: Neither. If one is faceless, how can one die?

Benjen Stark x Lyanna Mormont

G: Benjen did just come back to life, but I still think Lyanna would beat him out.

R: I think Benjen is going to play a large part in the final two seasons, so hopefully they didn’t bring him back just to kill him off again. That being said, killing Lyanna would be the worst thing to happen in this show and a lot of bad shit has happened in this show.

M: Lyanna Mormont is too precious. No one fucking touch the true queen of the North or I swear to the old gods and the new I WILL FIND YOU AND I WILL FEED YOU TO THE HOUNDS.

Ellaria Sand x Tyene Sand x Obara Sand x Nymeria Sand

G: Just end this household, please. Also feel Ellaria will see all her children murdered and then die. Like Cersei.

R: I have no emotional attachment to any of these ladies so…

M: They’re all very attractive and violent. I hope none of them, I want to watch them kill some more!

Beric Dondarrion x Meera Reed

G: If Melisandre dies, no one can bring back good ‘ol Beric who seems to die every two minutes. So, maybe Meera will outlive him.

R: Let Meera live so that she and Bran can be happy.

M: Both, could care less.

Robin Arryn x My Patience

G: Throw this prick down the Moon Door.

R: I’ll throw him down the Moon Door.

M: Do you want to play by the Moon Door? Come on and let’s play. I’ll never see you anymore, just go through that door and go away!

Grey Worm x Tormund

G: Honestly, they might both die. And I’ll be Wrecked™.

R: Like Jon, I also have a weakness for redheads.

M: Grey Worm. His innocence will be his undoing.

Viserion x Rhaegal x Drogon

G: Because Drogon is the lead dragon, I feel like he’s 100% dying. As for the other two: Viserion is named after Viserys Targaryen (Daenerys’ brother, who she burned alive using melted gold). And Rhaegal is named after Rhaegar Targaryen (Dany’s eldest brother and father to Jon Snow). I think Rhaegal will have the last laugh. At us.

R: Either Drogon is dying and we’re all going to cry or Drogon will be the only dragon left and we’re all going to cry.

M: I wonder what dragons taste like. Kinda hope they all die and are devoured so I can find out.

Night King x All The People

G: Either he dies, or everyone else in the show dies, so.

R: That’s it. That’s the show.

M: Night King. Winter can come but that shit never stays.

Bran Stark x Nymeria x Ghost

G: If all the remaining Starks are to keep their heads glued to their bodies, it only makes sense that their two remaining direwolves would take the blow for them. I anticipate lost Nymeria to jump in and save Arya from imminent death, thus sacrificing her life. And of course, the absolute same for Ghost.

R: This is a tough one. I think so long as Jon and Arya are alive, chances for Nymeria and Ghost living are pretty high. It’s really just a matter of whether Bran can outlive his siblings (or if he’ll live long enough to tell Jon the truth about who his parents really are.) There’s also that whole HEY I’M A WOLF thing to take into consideration.

M: I hope the dogs outlive Bran. I don’t have the patience to deal with him for another damn season.

Sansa Stark x Petyr Baelish (Littlefinger)

G: Sansa.

R: I don’t think Sansa will make it out of this show in one piece emotionally-speaking, but I think we’ve had a glimpse of a cunning, angry young woman who isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty and will do whatever it takes to get what she wants.

M: Littlefinger taught Sansa everything he knows. If you think she’s going to let him live after Baelish married her off to Ramsey, you’re an idiot.

Jon Snow x Daenerys Targaryen

G: Fcuk. If Jon Snow dies, it has to be literally the last frame of the series finale. I hope they both make it, but I don’t know if they will.

R: Both. I think if anyone’s making it out of this show alive and in one piece, it’s these two.

M: Man, I hate Dany. I hope Jon is the one to kill her because you know she’s going Targaryen mad by the end of this season.

Who Will Exit out in Season 7?

We’re expecting most of the punches to hit us in the final season, but losses will be suffered regardless. Keep in mind that Season 7 is bound to introduce new characters who could perish within the same season or carry over to Season 8 to add to the massacre.

If we had to pick who would most certainly leave this season, we’d put our money on the following:

  • Cersei Lannister (depending on how fast Dany is actually advancing into Westeros)
  • The Mountain
  • One of the Greyjoy siblings, probably Yara
  • Jorah Mormont
  • Grey Worm
  • Melisandre
  • Littlefinger
  • Tormund
  • Part of the Sand clan, not clear who
  • Jaqen H’ghar (if his story arc’s complete)

Are Some Houses on Their Way Out?

It’s important to wonder: will Game of Thrones Season 7 seek to wipe out houses off the chessboard? For instance, Olenna Tyrell is the only representative left of Highgarden. She might use her last move to bring down Cersei, but her house is pretty much obliterated. The Sand clan is still kicking, but their unclear motives and dysfunctional dynamics are bound to take Dorne out of the race sooner rather than later.

The Lannisters are enroute to be wiped out (with the possible exception of Tyrion who wants nothing to do with the Throne). Their descendants are all dead, and Cersei has already entered self-destruct mode. On the off chance Jaime survives to tell the tale, we highly doubt anything will come of him Throne-wise.

Gendry Waters is the only thing keeping House Baratheon standing (not really). That being said, we don’t even know if he’s still alive. And even if he resurfaces, he has nobody to back him up. His best bet is that, if he finds Arya, she will keep him safe in Winterfell.

The Greyjoys are in the hands of an emotionally-wrecked Theon and a flighty but spunky Yara. They also still have their crazy uncle within their midsts, so they could self-destruct. House Arryn is ruled by Littlefinger, who is certainly on his way out. Meanwhile, Robin Arryn is dumb enough to fall into the Moon Door during one of his tantrums.

Houses Definitely Making it to Season 8

Game of Thrones Season 7 predictions

The Starks and the Targaryens (reinstated by Dany) are the only ones strong enough to stand until the end. Of course, a couple of other houses will probably join them. But their fates have yet to be decided. The Dorne snakes might be too many to be wiped out in one season, and the Greyjoys might make it by a thread.

Another thing to consider is when will the White Walkers hit Westeros. If they’re saving the battle for Season 8, then houses like Lannister will perish sooner rather than later. What’s unclear is whether the White Walkers will interrupt the fight for the throne, or if they will hit right after the game is decided.

The Starks and Targaryens will need antagonists, whether it’s a fleeting Lannister house or a resurfaced House Baratheon, or even House Tully. But of course, a White Walker army is antagonist enough, and they did say winter has come. And “the lone wolf dies but the pack survives.”

Who knows? Just keep in mind George R. R. Martin’s wise words before you enter this season:

“The things we love destroy us every time, lad. Remember that.”
