The International 6: A Worldwide DotA 2 Battle
In just a few days, the biggest gaming tournament in the planet is starting. The International 6 (TI6), hosted by Valve Software, begins August 2nd. The tournament is known for gathering the best Defense of the Ancients 2 (DotA 2) teams from each continent. Well, that and having a prize pool of over 18.8 million dollars, although this is steadily increasing.
DotA 2 is a remake of the original Defense of the Ancients. In this game, two teams of five players fight to destroy the opposing team’s ancient building. The players choose from a hundred “Heroes” at the beginning. This is an important decision to make given that a single match can last between 15 to 90 minutes. This discrepancy is due to the fact that it depends on each team’s strategy and skill. Taking your heroes around the arena can strengthen them for when the time comes to fight as a team and destroy the opposing team’s heroes and base.
DotA 2 was still in its early stages of development when DotA’s first tournament managed to rack up a stunning $1.6 million prize pool. By the time TI3 rolled along, Valve started selling a tournament booklet called “The Compendium.” 25% of the sale went towards the prize pool, allowing community members to help grow the jackpot. Compendiums are also considered collectible items. Players who own one periodically receive free in-game gifts by completing community tasks given by Valve.
Evil Geniuses, a North American E-Sports organization, won TI5 with a grand prize of 6.6 million dollars. This came from a total prize pool of 18 million dollars. At that point, the organization took the top position in the highest overall earnings in a video gaming event, receiving recognition from companies such as ESPN, NY Times and other popular news sources.
