Weekend Reads: Gemina
Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff are back at it again with their action packed sequel to last year’s action packed space odyssey, Illuminae. Gemina picks up almost immediately after the end of Illuminae and tells the story of Hannah Donnelly, the whip-smart, kick-butt, privileged daughter of the commander of Jump Station Heimdall and Nik Malikov, a ne’er do well drug dealer with a heart of gold. When BeiTech—the same seedy corporation that wreaked havoc in Illuminae—sends a tactical strike team team to take over Heimdall, Hannah and Nik join forces to take them down. But with terrifying aliens that would make even a Xenomorph nervous on the loose and a wormhole on the fritz, saving the galaxy is no walk in the park. Told through the use of mixed media (internet chats, schematics, web pages and entries from Hannah’s journal to name a few) Gemina starts off with a bang and never slows down. Gemina won’t be on shelves until October so if you haven’t read Illuminae yet you’ve got plenty of time to catch up.
