Weekend Reads: Goldie Vance, Vol. 1

Goldie Vance Vol. 1, Hope Larson & Brittney Williams

Move over Nancy Drew, there’s a new ace detective in town and her name is Goldie Vance. Fans of the titian-haired girl detective (as well as Harriet the Spy and Flavia de Luce) are bound to love Hope Larson’s ongoing who-dun-it series as much as I do.

Sure, Goldie spends her days as a valet at the Crossed Palms resort rather than bombing around in a blue convertible, but her insatiable curiosity, charm, and knack for getting into trouble is absolutely on-par with Nancy’s. It’s Goldie’s dream to become the hotel’s in-house detective, and she’s well on her way to becoming just that. When her friend Walter (the hotel’s current detective) takes on a confounding case, Goldie gets to work. Soon Goldie is drag racing “borrowed” sports cars, playing matchmaker for her friends, eluding Russians, and chasing helicopters across Florida.

I’ve been a huge fan of Giant Days and Lumberjanes for ages now, and it’s very obvious that Boom! Box has another hit on their hands. Goldie Vance is ridiculously adorable, appropriate for all ages, and good clean fun. I honestly can’t wait to see what kind of trouble she gets herself into in Vol. 2.
