Weekend Reads: Join the Resistance

Star Wars: Join the Resistance, Ben Acker & Ben Blacker

It’s no secret that I’m a HUGE Star Wars fan. My location on twitter is listed as Bespin. It also happens that I’m wearing a Star Wars t-shirt as I write this. When I found out that Ben Acker and Ben Blacker (the geniuses behind Thrilling Adventure Hour) were joining forces to write a Star Wars novel, I was pretty excited. And Star Wars: Join the Resistance does not disappoint.

Canonically, Join the Resistance takes place right before The Force Awakens. Die-hard fans will be pleased to hear that a few familiar names. They’re heroes that Mattis Bans, who dreams of becoming a pilot, has idolized his whole life. When the Resistance recruits Mattis from the farm he lives and works on, he discovers that life on a rebel base isn’t all it’s cut out to be. He isn’t alone though. Mattis befriends several other rebels along the way. There’s Lorica, renowned for foiling smugglers, and Dec and his droid “brother”. Sari is a kick-butt coder and Klimo is an excitable Rodian. And then there’s their leader, Jo, who is definitely harboring a few secrets. Reality might not match his daydreams but that doesn’t keep Mattis from striving to be a hero.

There’s a moment towards the end of Star Wars: Join the Resistance that feels appropriate for what’s going on in the world. I hope that kids who read it will understand the message that Ben Acker & Ben Blacker, on some level at least, are trying to convey. Parents can be good parents, but that doesn’t mean you have to agree with them.  You can make a difference. You can be the change that this world (or a galaxy far, far away) needs. And while Join the Resistance is technically for younger grade readers, I think everyone will enjoy this one.
