If you’re anything like me then you binged the first season of Netflix’s GLOW (Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling) in a few days. And if you’re anything like me the wait for season two is slowly crushing your soul. Luckily for us, Slam! is the perfect girl power-fueled comic for you to binge-read in the interim. Instead of wrestling though, Slam! is all about the personal and professional lives of two best friends who end up on opposing roller derby teams.

Jennifer and Maisie meet on the first day of their Fresh Meat Orientation for the Eastside Roller Girls. Jennifer is seemingly fearless, Maisie is slowly learning to pick herself up after a bad fall, and they quickly become BFFs. When they’re drafted to different teams, their personal lives and the increasing pull of competition threatens to drive a wedge permanently between them. Fast-paced and colored in gorgeous shades of neon, Slam! is as loud, proud, and full of heart and heartbreak (and other breaks) as roller derby itself.

Weekend Reads is a Friday column of The Nerd League featuring nuggets of wisdom on the literary world. Our in-house galley virtuoso tends to have the scoop on stuff before it’s even out. To keep up with this week’s pick click here.
